In the first episode of How to be gay, Margriet is in China, where homosexuality is a great taboo and, according to many Chinese people, nonexistent. During a cruise a number of people come out of the closet to the great dismay of their parents. One mother visibly has a great deal of trouble with this and subsequently isolates herself. Margriet tries very carefully to contact her and this leads to a most vulnerable conversation. And Margriet's translator also appears to lead a double life.
