Campania, the area around Naples, is known as the biggest illegal landfill for chemical waste in Europe. This is where the Camorra, the local mafia, dumps industrial waste from all over Europe and even from outside the continent. They pour it in the rivers, they bury it in farmlands or burn it by the side of the road.
For the inhabitants of Campania, it is virtually impossible to escape the toxins caused by this illegal practice. Scientists have found the chemicals from the waste in the air, in the groundwater, in the fruits and, in the vegetables, in the meat they consume and in the hair of the local residents. As a result, the cancer rate in the area is four times higher than the national average.
