On November 23, the Netherlands woke up after a political earthquake. Many Dutch were speechless, numb, left in disbelief. Almost 25% of the electorate of the country voted for the most right-wing party, the PVV (Freedom Party). Geert Wilders’party is by far the biggest, after a convincing victory. Anti-Islamist, anti-EU and against 2030 climate targets. Geert Wilders is heavily protected by bodyguards wherever he goes for over 20 years, after numerous death threats and even a fatwa was declared against him. He seems to do it all on his own. Since the elections of November 22 he is the most popular politician in the Netherlands.
In Who is Wilders (52’) we unravel his success and his person. Wilders travels from safe house to safe house. How has this influenced him? What is his political strategy? What is his media strategy? What made him the person he is now? How has his youth shaped him? We talk to experts and insiders to paint the picture behind the scenes of his Freedom Party. We visit the poor neighbourhood of Kanaleneiland in the city of Utrecht, where he lived for several years. A neighbourhood dominated by foreigners. To what extend did that influence his political agenda?
